Cleansing is one of the most important steps in the skincare routine—if your skin isn’t totally clean, your other products won’t work as they are designed to.

A double cleanse can change the way your skin looks and feels, and is the cleansing method estheticians use in the treatment room to prepare skin for professional treatments.

You may have heard of double cleansing before, but do you know what it means?

Double-cleansing consists of two cleansing steps: Starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. Whether your skin is dry or oily, this method is for every skin type and removes all traces of makeup, sunscreen, dirt and pollution from your skin. It is important to use two different cleansing formulas in order to thoroughly cleanse your face of both oil and water-based impurities. The products used in this process are designed to work together to create a deep cleanse without over drying or causing clogged pores.

STEP ONE:

  • Apply your oil-based cleanser with dry hands to dry skin.

  • Massage the product over your face with your fingertips using gentle circular motions. Use upward and outward (following the lymph channels) motion. You should massage it in for 60 seconds, do it with intention and make it a ritual.

  • Add a bit of warm water to emulsify (it should turn milky), then rinse the product off thoroughly with warm water.

STEP TWO:

  • Use a water-based cleanser, also known as a foam or gel cleanser that is for your skin type.Water-based cleansers draw out water-based impurities like sweat and dirt to fully cleanse the skin and pores.

  • Spend 60 seconds working it into the skin, not neglecting the hairline, nose creases and jaw line. You want to make sure that the ingredients in your cleanser have a chance to actually clean your skin and treat your concerns.

  • Rinse the product off thoroughly with warm water.
